Bhutan's Bitcoin Sell-Off Continues

Bhutan has moved another 319 BTC, taking the total to over 9,000 BTC since late 2024, and trimming its sovereign stash by around 70%. The transfer follows a series of recent wallet movements by the country flagged by Arkham, with Bhutan’s Bitcoin holdings dropping from about 13,000 BTC in late 2024 to 3,654 BTC in April. The kingdom has not publicly commented on the recent disposals, and the activity is inferred from wallet labels and transaction patterns tied to the government and Druk Holding & Investment.

The sell-off marks a significant reduction in Bhutan's Bitcoin holdings, which were built up through state-backed mining that uses hydropower to support data centers. As a result, Bhutan is still the fifth-largest publicly tracked nation-state holder, behind the United States, the United Kingdom, El Salvador, and the United Arab Emirates.

A key question now is whether other nation-state holders will follow Bhutan's lead and reduce their Bitcoin holdings. With the crypto market remaining volatile, investors will be watching closely for any signs of further sell-offs from major holders. The next few weeks will be crucial in determining the direction of the market, with a potential drop in prices if other nation-states decide to sell their holdings.
